6 things you haven’t thought of when hiring a wedding photographer

We know how important choosing the right photographer is for your day…and it’s not just about the photos, it’s so much more!

  1. The Epic Photograph

Number one of course, you want someone who makes stunning photographs but you also want to keep in mind that you also want someone with a sensitivity to capturing the little moments. The ability to tell your story and the story of the day might be one of the most important things to look for - are they going to deliver a set of images that you will be able to truly remember and feel what it FELT like to be there that day?

  2. Experienced but not Jaded

Experience is good, but if someone has been doing this for 20+ years you definitely have to make sure they aren’t too jaded and keeping up with the times. Newer younger photographers aren’t a bad bet, they have a fresh eye and enthusiasm, though anyone charging significantly under market value is likely too inexperienced and doesn’t quite know what they are doing yet. You want someone who has experience but isn’t stodgy and old school. Sometimes people can get stuck in their ways and unable to come up with fresh ways of working and creating - ASK yourself, do they seem passionate and that they care deeply about their craft?

  3. Assertive and Unobtrusive

You want someone who can help you run the show that day but also step back and not be intrusive. Because the photographer, especially if you do not have a day of coordinator, will be the person making sure the timeline is working smoothly and keeping things on track. They have to be able to step up and take charge when needed but also have a default mode of observing the day as to allow the natural and candid moments to happen and to be there to capture them in an authentic way.

  4. A Chill Vibe

Okay so here is the thing, you will spend your WHOLE DAY with the wedding photographer, so you want to make sure you feel at ease and that it is someone you can connect with one some level and that they make you feel comfortable.

  5. Posing Coach

I get this remark all the time “We aren’t that comfortable in front of the camera” or “my partner is really awkward in photos”. That’s okay, it’s actually normal because normal people getting married don’t have tons of experience in front of the camera (unless for some reason that is part of your profession). You want to look for a photographer who understands how to guide you to be able to feel comfortable in front of the camera, and who has an arsenal of tips and poses that will help break the ice and get you looking like your natural authentic self!

  6. A People Person

Needless to say, you probably want to hire someone that likes people! More specifically, you want someone who is sensitive to the natural waves of emotions of the day, who is compassionate, who knows how to navigate family dynamics and manage all the personalities that gather on this day. You likely will be able to even gather this information from their bio copy, photos and emails.
